THE SCIENCE OF ENDINGS



He had some questions. He wondered if there was an edge to the universe. He knew it was expanding, always expanding. But way far out there, was there an edge, that you could fall off of?

And what if the universe is just part of something even bigger? And all the stars were like grains of sand. Would its inhabitants be able to predict the future of earthlings, the way we can predict the behavior of atoms, when we split them?


Can the flapping of a butterfly wing on a beautiful summer day cause turbulence in a heart?

Does anyone know that there’s a star (called Sagittarius A star) dancing around a black hole in the center of our galaxy?

If a powerful flare flashed out of the sun and caused a current to run through the earth and all the lights on the earth were dimmed, would the rhythms and desires of women's bodies once again be ruled by the moon?


The tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion (inertia) varies with the mass (according to Newton.) Could a person make himself denser, make his existence so substantial that the state of his motion resisted all change, and nothing affected it?

If you left a person on a platform and got on a train traveling at the speed of light, causing time to stop for you relative to that person (according to Einstein,) would your feelings about her also stop?


Does the message “I’m uncertain whether we should be together” change when you look away?

If the Earth’s inner core is made of solid iron, what is a human's inner core made of? How hard a blow would it take to shatter it?

Can a magnet be attracted to something it repels?

Would you have time to tie yourself to the earth if gravity suddenly stopped, or would you shoot into space, tumbling in the darkness until you died?

How much energy would be released if your mass were reduced to zero?

 If you make a wish on the evening star, does it come true, even though it's just a planet?

   I  took one of my cemetery walks the other day, and for the first time, I felt sad. Not just the usual melancholy, which I often feel on my strolls among the dead. That feels ok; it's a melancholy that's mixed with gratitude and mystery.  No, this was glistening eyes aching chest sad.   It was a sunny morning; the tombstones had hard edges, and threw crisp shadows onto the grass. Young men in bright yellow vests rode their stand-up mowers with abandon through the rows of markers. Contemplating the green expanse, cut through by paths and roads, I felt the beat of my heart and the pulses of my muscles and the songs of the birds. Way at the top of the hill, at the far boundary of the cemetery, I could see two parked cars, and the canopy put up to shade the arriving mourners. Can I Be Grateful Enough?

I'm grateful for the robins who hop around in the thin grass outside my back door and for the mockingbirds who sing and whistle while I hang my clothes up on the line. And I give thanks for the sun , by the way, who dries my clothes and peeks capriciously into the windows of my house when it's out. There are five seats in my home where you might sit directly in its light, if you can catch it.  There are 18 places for the two of us to sit at my house, plus two on the front porch and four on the back. I appreciate the fact that we and our guests have places to rest, eat, and work comfortably. I'm grateful that we can afford t he price of admission to the zoo: it's gone up. They've installed a new section, where we are lucky enough to see grizzly bears, bison and a condor - and sometimes wolves at feeding time - living in relatively spacious captivity. There is a gondola that carries us grandly up to where they live.   One day I watched in awe
